Meanwhile in London

“The surviving members of Pink Floyd reunited onstage tonight at London’s 02 Arena during a stop on Roger Waters’ Wall tour – marking only the second time that Nick Mason, David Gilmour and Waters had played together in the last 30 years.” (Rolling Stone)

This is one of those once in a lifetime moments.

One Of These Days

I’m going to cut you into little pieces. With an ice skate.

I was reading through the Wiki page for the Pink Floyd song when I stumbled upon this:

Hungarian figure skater Krisztina Czakó used “One of These Days” (along with “Shine On You Crazy Diamond“) as the music for her long program at the 1992 Winter Olympics, one of the few times that a classic rock song has ever been featured in an elite-level ice skating competition.

She was barely a few months older than 13 at the time. Now I don’t know much about figure skating (other than it is nice to watch) but awesomeness of this magnitude I couldn’t let go unposted.

Pigs on the Wing

In preparation of the impending epidemic I watched Children of Men yesterday to get into the proper post-apocalyptic mood. I’m not sure the sheer awesomeness of the movie registered during the first viewing. Take the reference below as an example:

It’s also very important to mention that almost every shot in the movie contains some kind of animal, usually a dog. Symbolism galore.

As for the Swine Flu status, not much to report. There aren’t less people in the streets, but the ratio of face-masked pedestrians has dramatically increased. Almost all public workers – such as shop assistants, bus drivers, postal workers, etc. – wear masks as well. Yesterday evening the neighborhood Lawson convenience store informed shoppers that it was out of stock for masks. (I just went to buy Coke.) Reuters now reports more than a hundred people confirmed as infected in Japan, a number I’m not sure I believe. No zombies have been spotted yet.

Comfortably Numb (Pulse)

De most komolyan, ezt kellene (különösen 4:55-től) lejátszani mindenkinek kötelezően ének-zene órán. Nem Hull a szilvát énekeltetni a szerencsétlen fahangúakkal. Kodály módszer my ass. Gilmour módszer!

Look, a gaijin!

This morning I was shuffling towards Yoshinoya peacefully, spacing out to One of These Days thumping from my Sennheiser PX-100s (very good choice for iPods). I like walking this way, filtering the noise of the crowd by loud music, insulating myself from them.

This was when an old Japanese man crept up behind me – not that much stealth was needed – and shouted in my ears from behind “My meishi!” And he waved his business card in my face. Needless to say it made me jump.

This is still the way some people here think is appropriate to make friends with a zoo animal foreigner.
