BUDAPEST– April 30, 2010 – SeSam celebrated the 100000th scrobble on the music site Last.fm. The jubilatory track was Capital of Nowhere from the latest studio album of The Gathering. SeSam has been using the Last.fm service since November 12, 2006, and managed to reach this impressive scrobble count in less than four years. Statistically this feat requires listening to an average of 79 songs every day.

“Music is more ancient and more intrinsic to humanity than language. I believe every person has a soundtrack of their life. I just chose mine to be kept a record of,” he explained.

“Also, the idea behind Last.fm resonates very well with my achievement whoring and point collecting OCD,” he added laughing.

Ugye a last.fm nemrégen meglepetésszerűen bejelentette, hogy a jövőben csak előfizetők élvezhetik a rádió szolgáltatását, kivéve Németországban, az Egyesült Királyságban és az USÁ-ban. Ez a változás április végén élesedett is: a nem előfizető felhasználók csak 30 számig próbálhatták ki az online rádiót. Ezzel együtt sok kritika is érte a last.fm-et, nevezetesen hogy a szolgáltatás minősége nem igazán éri el azt a szintet, hogy fizetni kelljen érte.

Talán ezen is felbuzdulva tegnapelőtt fellibbentették a fátylat az új rádió oldalról. A legszembetűnőbb változás, hogy lecserélték a flash lejátszót egy jóval nagyobbra. Ezzel lejátszás közben diavetítést nézhetünk a felhasználók által feltöltött rengeteg képből, innen a last.fm visual radio fantázianév. Hogy a látványt egységesítsék kicsit egy mikropöttyös háló szűri a képeket. A fotók nem statikusak, hanem az iPhoto vetítéséhez hasonló Ken Burns effekt (pan-and-scan) teszi filmszerűvé az élményt. Nekem nagyon tetszett a dolog, jó kikapcsolódás nézegetni.

A lejátszó alatt is újdonságok lapulnak. A rokon előadók mellé érkezett egy ügyes statisztika arról, milyen gyakran és mikor hallgattuk az adott számot. Ezt szívesen látnám a profiloldalon is valahol. Ugyanitt kapunk még eseményajánlót is, ha az adott előadó éppen turnézik.

Sokan biztosan örülnek majd neki, hogy kívánságra kikapcsolható a scrobbling, azaz a hallgatott számok nem kerülnek be a felhasználó adatbázisába. Így nyugodtan lehet hithű rockereknek is gagsta rapet hallgatni a gyalázat publikálása nélkül.

Régen áhított lehetőség valósult meg a többcímkés rádióval: ezentúl nem csak egy, hanem akár három címke szerint is kérhetjük a számok szűrését. Egészen vad kombinációkkal is előhozakodhatunk, csak a tartalom szab határt a szokatlan zenei ízlésnek. Japán hiphop rádió, valaki?

Sajnos nekem is csak a 30 számos betekintő kipróbálására volt lehetőségem, így nehéz megmondani, hogy a legtöbbet felemlegetett problémán – az elégséges tartalom hiányán – sikerült-e javítani. Feltételezem napi szinten próbálnak minél több számot hozzáadni a rendszerhez, amennyire a kiadók engedik, így remélhetőleg egyre kevesebbszer fordul elő, hogy lejátszható számok hiánya miatt leáll a választott csatorna.

In a surprise move today last.fm announced that their radio feature will only be available for subscribers outside the US, UK and Germany. Subscription costs 3 Euro for a month. The way I understand it this will affect everything from friend channels to recommendation radios. Non-subscribers will be eligible for 30 tracks of free samples then they will need to subscribe to continue listening.

The only grey area for me is how they will decide who’s in the US and who’s not. Is this based on IP-detected geolocation or simply the user’s country setting? Also if I downloaded my iPhone app from the US iTunes Store do I count as a US user?

It is easy to tell that even though 3 Euro is not that high a price this change will be extremely unpopular. The announcement post is already filling with comments expressing emotions ranging from dissatisfaction to pure white hot rage. And I am not entirely sure that that the sometimes really bad quality, slow streaming and “not enough content” errors won’t prevent many from even considering subscribing.

It would really be helpful in understanding the situation if they actually released any information as to why this change was necessary. Is it the music industry trying to squeeze more money out of them or a corporate decision from CBS? Also what is the money going to be used for? Is it going to fill the pockets of the label owners or the actual musicians?

Sorting out the issues with the radio service and the usually meager content first wouldn’t have been a bad idea either. People are a lot more likely to pay for something that’s actually worth it.

I quite like last.fm’s radio service and I listen to it often when I get bored of my music collection or when I am just way too lazy to set up a playlist. But there are obvious limitations the most essential of which is the simple fact that they don’t have all the songs I’d like. Plus what if I just wanted to listen my own songs like a radio station?

Apple’s answer was the Genius feature in iTunes. It is a good feature indeed, nevertheless I found myself not using it too much. The selection algorithm is OK, but there are still times when a completely unsuitable song somehow gets selected to the playlist baffling me how it got there.

This is why Boffin excited me from the very start: this tech demo beta from last.fm combines two excellent sets of data, firstly your own music collection and secondly last.fm’s plethora of user tags.

The spartan UI has three play control buttons and a weighted tag cloud. Simply selecting the tags that suit your mood and hitting play would start a “radio station” of your own songs. I don’t know much about the selection process but so far it has never disappointed. A great way to rediscover some rarely listened tracks or forgotten numbers as well.

It’s worth mentioning that the initial scanning looked so awesome and interesting I would never have imagined the dull process could ever be like. To generate the tag cloud Boffin needs to run through your music collection and gather their metadata. While doing this the filenames complete with path are rolling up in a discreet shade of grey in the background adding a geeky effect. And for the coup de grâce Boffin quickly dowloads photos of the artists found and floats them fading in and out in the foreground. The end result looks so good I won’t even post a screenshot: I think you should see it for yourselves.

Boffin only reads mp3 files yet but support for various other formats is promised. Hopefully even some user recommended features such as boolean combination of tags or more interaction with the track selection process will eventually be implemented as well.

The beta is currently available for Windows and OS X. Along with the prebuilt binaries the source is also downloadable and many claimed they’ve successfully compiled it under various linux distributions. To use it no other software is needed: just let it scan through your music and then hit play. If you have a last.fm account then you can use the official last.fm client to scrobble your playlist.

I have been patiently waiting for the Last.fm iPhone App to appear in the Japanese iTunes Store but I guess the local mobile music lobby is way too strong to allow it any soon. All the mobile providers here offer some kind of music streaming service after all.

The Last.fm App for the iPhone is currently only available in the US, the UK, Germany, Spain, France and Canada. If you don’t happen to live in these countries you are basically shafted – in theory.

So I decided to hack my way into the US iTS. It is surprisingly easy with the introduction of the free applications since formerly the biggest issue was to somehow acquire a valid credit card number of the target state.

Apple itself offers a “tutorial” on how to create an iTunes App Store account without a credit card. The only difference is that at the bottom of the iTS screen you have to select the US store:

And as an address you need to specify a valid US location for which I used the San Francisco Apple Store’s. Remember to register a different email as well if you already have an iTS registration. Piece of cake. Note that this works for any free iPhone Application you’d want to get from the US iTS.

Very elegantly the iPhone can feature Apps from different stores. At least I managed to retain all my previous applications exactly the way they were and simply had the Last.fm App transfer over as if it was from the J-Store as well.

As for the Last.fm App itself: I went shopping with my phone in my pocket tuned to my recommendations and I was on cloud nine. Bless my limitless 3G data plan now I can listen to Last.fm stations anywhere with adequate reception. (To my great disappointment mountains are blocking some of the Kobe-U classrooms.)

One weird issue I have encountered using the app is that it is prone to run out of buffer constantly using my WiFi network. This is quite strange since it never ever had such a problem on the obviously much slower 3G network. I suspect it is some coding quirk in Apple’s networking implementation or in the Last.fm App’s streaming code. For now I just disabled WiFi entirely since 3G is fast enough for anything anyway.

It all started with a tweet.

Coda.fm might have been born by the creators having full access to my dreams. A shockingly clear-cut site offering full album torrent downloads with promising WEB 2.0 integration.

So far there’s no advertising. Users can register and upload their torrents. All Coda.fm does is tracking these and organising the uploaded materials in a very tasteful and user-friendly environment.

Legally Coda.fm cannot be held responsible for piracy. Torrent files themselves are not illegal, no matter how certain entities would like them to be. Nevertheless the site’s activity can be perceived as aiding and abetting piracy. They will surely have a hard time with RIAA and alike. But everyone downloads things. Record companies have a better chance in turning back time than stopping downloading.

Anyway, Coda.fm – simple as it is – could do with a few advanced features, like a more extensive search: I’d love to be able to find all albums in a lossless format. Or a better Last.fm integration, letting users sign in with their Last.fm account and offering them albums based on their listening stats.

But so far so good, and since the site has only started a few days ago I am fairly certain new features will be added in the near future.

Last.fm’s recent decision to change some more musical tags overnight started a heated discussion on their forums. Up until now I mostly tagged my musicals with the artist being the title of the musical. Musicbrainz – and lately to some extent Last.fm – is of the opinion however that the composer should be credited. Which is equally wrong if you ask me, after all isn’t the composer a separate id3 tag?

The way I see it the biggest problem is with the id3 tagging. I think it’s the remainder of an obsolete format (mp3). It would be a lot better if there were a standardised tagging method, using XML, that all formats could embed from m4a to flac. I see XML as a solution because it doesn’t limit the amount of data that can be added. It could even incorporate a plethora of additional information such as if the track in question is a live recording or not, if anyone’s guest starring, if it’s a cover of a song, etc.

Of course I’m dreaming of some utopia…

A videót persze először Youtubera szerettem volna kitenni. Érdekes meglepetésként ért, amikor a feltöltés után kábé fél perccel beesett egy email, hogy a szerzői jogok tulajdonosa, az NBC, leszedette a videót azonnali hatállyal. Ezek a fiúk aztán gyorsak, gondoltam, de nem erről volt szó.

Ami engem elkapott, az a Youtube automatikus tartalomszűrője. Ugyanúgy, ahogy a musicbrainz vagy a last.fm ujjlenyomatozza a zeneszámokat, úgy ezek a stúdiók is ilyen módszerrel figyeltetik, nem teszi-e valaki közzé ingyen a tulajdonukat. Nagyon cseles…

A fiúk (és lányok) Londonban úgy döntöttek, itt az ideje egy kis Last.fm arcfelvarrásnak. A vadonatúj design mögött azonban mélyebb, a rendszert is érintő változások is állnak.

Az ígéretek szerint nem kell majd tovább várni a toplisták heti összesítéseire. Minden valós időben számolódik.  A feltöltött (továbbra sem tudok a scrobble-re magyar megfelelőt) számokat a profil zenei adatbázisában tárolja, mely kereshető, lejátszható, stb. Beépítenek egy Facebook-szerű aktivitásjelzőt is. És a site külseje alapvetően átalakul: hangsúlyosabb lesz a közösségi tényező, egyszerűbben használható a rádió.
