Should I start asking people walking down a street if they agree with the importance of the freedom of speech I bet most of them would nod vehemently. But what if I asked if it’s OK to draw profane cartoons about Islam? Or Christianity? Or cartoons in which the Simpsons kids are having sex?
Now we know what the law thinks, least in Australia:
Now this one raises a plethora of questions. Does it mean cartoon characters have human rights as well? What constitutes as a cartoon character? If an Australian kid scribbles an obscene cartoon on the side of his math book in class using stick figures can he be prosecuted? And why is pornography special when in almost any cartoon the characters break the law in many ways?
Neil sums up smartly at the beginning of his quite lengthy post regarding the topic:
If you accept — and I do — that freedom of speech is important, then you are going to have to defend the indefensible. That means you are going to be defending the right of people to read, or to write, or to say, what you don’t say or like or want said.
Just another example I stumbled upon is the joint decision of UK internet providers to collectively block a wikipedia page for allegedly dangerous imagery:
The blocked page of the online encyclopaedia shows an album cover of German heavy metal band Scorpions, released in 1976. Internet providers acted after online watchdog the Internet Watch Foundation warned them its picture may be illegal. The IWF said it was a “potentially illegal child sexual abuse image”.
The album cover belongs to Virgin Killer featuring a naked prepubescent girl. The decision stirred up so much controversy the wiki page was even locked up for a while preventing edit warring.
I tend to think looking at that album cover or the comic with the Simpsons can’t turn anyone into a pedophiliac. And I believe it’s absurd that something drawn, i.e. not real, can be grounds for child porn prosecution.

Mintha fogni kéne az internetező kezét, és úgy vigyázni rá, átkísérni az INTERNET túloldalára
De így rengeteg dolog kerülhetne tiltólistára…. Pedig ha valamit nem mutatunk, az van, attól nem fog megszűnni.
It is overprotection in some way. But on the other hand it scratches the surface one of the greatest taboo of our society. The western culture is also prudish in the manner of picturing sexuality. So it isn’t an easy question.
The rights of cartoons is an interesting question. It has some of the absurdity of the copyright laws, and the english law system
But if they can have rights, then they are considered to be public person. Therefore the caricatures about them cannot be prosecuted 
(I think there is some law, at least in Hungary).

Amikor ezeket a híreket olvastam, anno, Orwelltől az 1984 jutott eszembe, amerikában már sokan ott tartanak, háború van, szabadság már nem sok, köszönhetően a (Nemzetvédelmi törvénynek), tudatlanság, tisztelet a kivételnek az is van. Remélem, hogy a világ többi hatalma nem követi őket, mert akkor nagyon, nagy sz*rban leszünk. Mert valahogy nem értem, hogy az állam, engem mint egyszerű polgárát miért akar megvédeni, a gondolatoktól, eszéktől??? Azt feltételezik, hogy nincs agyam, amit használni is tudok ???? Attól, hogy valamit, ami rossz eltitkolunk, az emberek elől, attól a rossz még nem szűnik meg. A brittek meg nem tudom, hogy mit hörögnek, ok, tényleg elégé fiatal az a kiscsaj a borítón, szóval ne nézzék meg az angol állampolgárok, de az nem gond, hogy náluk, a gyerekek, átlagosan 14 évesen, már nem szüzek, 16 évesen, már aktív nem életet élnek, s rendszeres alkohol, narkó fogyasztók, s olyan nyugodtan késelik meg egymást, egy rossz szóért, hogy az a brutalitás még a Battle Royale-t is felülmúlja. Jah ez nem probléma. Nekem ez valahogy a szocializmus látszatintézkedéseire emlékeztet.
Ami meg a Rajzfilm karakterek cselekedeteit nézzük, alig várom, hogy Narakut életfogytiglanra ítéljék a csapatával, sorozatosan elkövetett népirtásért. Vagy verselő Linát beperlik közbotrány okozásért, meg négyértékű rongálásért, hogy csak két itthon is ismertebb karaktert mondjak, de ha már itt vagyunk, akkor mi lesz Ludas Matyival, aki végül is a hatalom megbuktatására tőr, s a hatalom képviselőjének súlyos maradandó sérüléseket okozott
S a hentai mangákkal mi lesz ??? Most azok is tiltólistára kerülnek ??? XD
Szóval szánalmas ez az egész, s csak röhögni tudnék rajta, ha páran, az EU-ban, ezt nem vennék komolyan…
